A natural alternative used in the treatment to stimulate hair regrowth

At Cambridge Cosmetic Clinic

This a non invasive and safe alternative for hair loss treatment for both male and female patients. Androgenic alopecia is a common form of hair loss in both men and women. For men this is known as male pattern baldness. PRP contains growth factors that aid cells within the body to repair and regenerate which can naturally lead to increased hair volume. PRP can be effective in both preventing hair loss and promotion of hair regrowth. This is also the case for post hair transplant patients whereby PRP stimulates new hair growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

About PRP

  • How does PRP for hair loss work?

You can self-refer for this treatment at our Cambridge-based clinic. We treat both male and female patients for hair loss prevention and androgenic alopecia. PRP is also recommended by most hair transplant surgeons post-treatment. PRP encourages the existing hair follicle to grow for a thicker and fuller appearance. It’s a way to stimulate hair growth without surgery.

  • How soon will I see the results of PRP?

You should start to see results 3-6 months following initiation of treatment. The results will last for 12 months if you’re having the treatment for hair loss.

  • What will my PRP treatment plan look like?

For hair regrowth, at Cambridge Cosmetic Clinic, it is advised you have 3 initial sessions, 4 – 6 weeks apart. If you are happy with the results, you should have a maintenance treatment every 3 to 6 months to preserve the new hair growth. During each session, blood will be drawn usually from your arm, and then placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge will separate the blood components to extract the platelet-rich plasma (PRP). This will take approximately 10 minutes. The platelet-rich plasma will then be placed in a syringe and injected back into the scalp.

  • Is PRP treatment for hair loss painful?

A topical local anaesthetic may be applied beforehand to minimise discomfort. Following treatment, there may be some swelling, redness and bruising but this should settle.  You will not be expected to need any downtime following this treatment.

Your journey

Your consultation

As well as discussing your aesthetic goals, at Cambridge Cosmetic Clinic, we’ll need to assess your medical history before PRP can take place. In certain cases, you may be advised to see your GP or dermatologist for further advice or investigation.

Your PRP hair loss treatment

Blood will be taken from you, spun in a centrifuge for 10 minutes, and then the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is injected into your scalp.

Aftercare

We’ll give you full aftercare advice following PRP treatment, which will involve avoiding washing the treated area for at least 5 hours after your treatment to optimise results and avoid high temperatures such as saunas, steam rooms and exercise. It is advised you leave washing your hair until the evening or morning after your hair loss treatment. If you have any concerns post-treatment you can contact the clinic for advice.
